| In Regency England, Nikolai is a Russian noble visiting an English cousin. He will inherit an earldom when his father dies. Nikolai is totally in love with Suzanne, but her great-uncle has other plans for her, and is determined to see that she marries royalty. Uncle Lucius, a vampire, turns Nikolai and forces him to abandon any attempt to see the beauteous Suzanne, who believes Nikolai has been murdered and his corpse returned to his homeland for burial. At her death at eighty-five, Nicholas weeps for her, then emigrates to America with the wealth he has amassed from decades of wise investments. Occasionally he sleeps for decades without trauma, and awakens to the incessant cultural and technological changes.
In the twenty-first century, Lauren, daughter of two prominent surgeons in New York, has followed her heart and her love of antiques to a small North Carolina town. Armed with a Bachelor’s degree and three years’ experience in restoration for an antiques-store owner, she now opens her own store. Lauren feels the hand of fate in this decision, and indeed this may be so, for Nikolai sees her and sees in her the return of his beloved Suzanne. The strange background of Lauren’s family, originally from Europe, indicates that she might indeed be a descendant of Suzanne, although she of course has no idea. Heritage of Hearts is a tautly-written and intriguing tale with a seriously surprising climax that will touch the reader’s heart. L. H. Young is an author to watch. She delves into the personalities of her characters very well, and makes them endearing and appealing to the reader. Even the “villainous” characters are painted as three-dimensional, realistic, individuals.
