| Gabrielle is a vampire that is ready to die, and she's hoping the villagers that are attacking her are successful at finally killing her. She's been alone for so long, fighting the evil that surrounds her that she just wants to give up and move on. She feels what has happened to the village is her fault anyway, and she can't live with it any more, nor can she live with the loneliness. She'd made a decision long ago that cost her everything, respect, her lover, along with her home and her entire way of life. She sees no reason to go on, until out of the blue the man she lost saves her from the mob.
Erik is shocked at the change in his maker; he never thought to find her ready to die. He can't bear to see her go out that way, so he saves her and brings her back to health. She'd renounced him long ago, but he can't seem to shake the feelings that he's had for her ever since they first met. When she doesn't seem to want him, he decides to walk away. Told from both Gabrielle and Erik's point of view, this story doesn't pull any punches about what their lives are like. Gabrielle is a strong leader who does what she thinks is right. She can't forgive herself for a mistake she made, and she thinks that Erik can't forgive her either. Erik has never figured out why Gabrielle pushed him away, but the love he has for her never died. This was a wonderful story that doesn't shrink from the realities of Gabrielle and Erik's lives, but at the same time really makes you feel for both of them, mistakes and all. I can't say enough about this fantastic book, it kept me thinking and wondering what was going on with Erik and Gabrielle long after I finished. Her Last Words is definitely one you shouldn't miss!
