| Lily Parker is new to Chicago and new to St. Sophia's private school for girls, she's also new to her Firespell powers. Now that she has newly discovered paranormal capabilities she and her best friend and roomie Scout patrol the night with a group of other Adepts fighting the evil magic practitioners known as Reapers. If that weren't enough to deal with the snobs who run her school are giving her a hard time; she has no idea what her parents are up to; she's crushing on a guy with a huge secret and the baddie who gave her the powers she now has wants to help her develop her abilities. And she still has all her homework to do and mandatory study hall!
This was a fantastic young adult paranormal novel that I read in one sitting. Lily and Scout's adventures kept me turning the pages until I was sorry to come to the very last one. In all honesty I could have simply read an entire book constructed of conversations between the two best friends. Scout's sarcasm is an art form all of it's own and Lily's straight man retorts are wonderful. I loved how likable the lead character was, that Lily remained true to herself even when confronted with unfamiliar paranormal and romantic matters as well as very familiar teen issues. The pacing was solid as was the plot and the world building was fantastic. All of the secondary characters are well developed -- it is the entire cast of colorful characters, both good and bad, that make this such an unforgettable story. I can't wait for the next instalment to see what some of the supporting characters get themselves up to. The tone of this book is fabulous, keeping a lighthearted teenage voice with a smart heroine and her funny best friend. I can't wait to read about the Adept's future escapades. This was a fun read, providing action, adventure and romance and I highly recommend it to readers of all ages.
