Jessie Pringle was looking for a place to start over after a terrible incident left her scarred and with recurring flashbacks of an attack she can't remember when she came across a brochure for a ski resort in Pine Creek, Maine. Somehow she finds herself drawn to it and decides that that is where she and her service dog Toby belong. She was planning to slowly move on, but she never could have imagined meeting a man like Ian MacKeage, especially not her very first night in town. In fact, the whole MacKeage clan is different than any family she's ever met. Ian, however, sees Jessie as the person he's been waiting his whole life to meet. But between her physical and mental pain, Jessie is having a hard time letting Ian into her life. That is until she's finagled into trading her cane for a burled staff by the local hermit who swears it's magical. Can the magic be real?

I absolutely love Ms. Chapman's Highlanders and this book is no exception. Don't worry, they can all be read on their own without having read the others though. The one issue I have is with the genre the publisher put this book in, because I really think that this belongs in the paranormal category since there is definitely something outstanding about the MacKeages. Ms. Chapman just writes wonderful stories with incredibly compelling characters that draw you in and make you feel attached to them. Toby feels like your own pet and even the mountain becomes a character though her amazing writing. I'll admit the other reason I think I love the MacKeage men, and Ian is a prime example, is that they are just majorly alpha males. They're sure they know what's right and their women soon learn that they would also do anything to keep them happy. Not to mention the lovely touch of magic.
