Alison Williams thought her life was over just before she turned 16. Her lifetime best friend, Talon Holt, raised white, but actually Comanche, decided to leave Banning, Texas. He gave her no reason except to tell her she was too young and he had to go. Five years later, he returned. He had traveled back to a nearby town, Devil’s Fork, Texas, every year for the past 5—he stayed long enough to hear the gossip and to find out if anything new was happening in Alison’s life.

In 1872, his trip to Devil’s Fork provided him with rumors he could not ignore. Seems Alison’s father had not only lost his home place to Garrett Sumrall. He had also bet his daughter’s (Alison) hand in marriage and lost that bet, too. She was scheduled to wed this horrible excuse for a man in one week. Sumrall had attacked Talon the year before, and Talon shot his gun out of his hand and crippled his hand. There was already a lot of hostility between them; this just made it worse.

Ms. Rebecca Goings has created another book with in-depth characters that literally leapt off the pages of her novel. The descriptions were complex and made it easy to care about the good ones and hate the bad. Alison and Talon had missed 5 years of each other’s lives and it affected the personalities they presently lived with. In her unique way, Ms. Goings has again given us an incredible plot with characters that captivate the reader’s imagination. Her supporting cast, including the “bad” guys, was presented in such a way that I could literally picture them as I read.

As you can tell, I loved this book and recommend that anyone put this on your must-read list. You will definitely not be sorry to read it. The book takes some surprising turns which will add to the enjoyment.
