| Nikos Dirvan is an off-world recon traveler whose missions are to overfly Earth and observe. His species, the Talorians, are inveterate collectors of information about other planets, including Earth, which is rumored to entrap and torture alien visitors. On a routine flight, smog over L.A. impacts his ship’s manifolds and he crash lands near Las Vegas, where he must purchase fuel for a return flight. Nik is really hoping that after this exciting mission he can be promoted to Contacts. Since he is a telepath, he begins to win big in the casino because he has no concept of how much Earth funds he needs to purchase fuel.
Carla Fletcher married Drake against her friends’ advice, listening to his promises and only later discovering his ugly truths. Now Drake is determined that Carla will conceive a grandchild first, to satisfy his controlling father, and since he’s incapable, she must first find, and then submit to, a donor, one whom Drake selects. He thinks the man at the blackjack table amassing piles of coins is an appropriate target. Caitlyn Willows pens a fascinating story with characters for whom the reader feels an immediate empathy. Nikos and Carla are both endearing characters, poised against the backdrop of that hateful villain Drake and his father, and this reviewer found herself cheering for the couple from the very beginning. This was my introduction to the stories of Ms. Willows and she has moved to my must-read-authors list.
