| Barbara and Del had to get married right out of high school because of an unplanned pregnancy. Seventeen years later they’ve stopped talking and find themselves separated. He thinks she threw him out; she thinks he deserted his family because she wasn’t enough for him. After two months apart their son is badly beaten and undergoes emergency surgery to save his life. They find out he’s tied to a murder but he isn’t awake to explain. Their home is vandalized and their daughters threatened, so Del and Barb team up to keep their family safe. With all that going on will Barbara and Del ever get a chance to talk about their marriage?
His Ordinary Life is a superbly written, emotionally charged and complicated story. The depth of the characters and the intricacies of this very detailed and absorbing plot are nothing less than amazing. The hero and heroine are both great people and easy to relate to. The reader can’t help feeling they are too nice to be in this situation. My heart went out to both of them from the first. Del’s policeman brother and rape-victim-turned-counselor sister provide insight and momentum that keeps the pace buzzing right along. They are both multi-faceted, interesting characters I’d like to read more about. The reader is sucked right in and carried along for the full experience of this roller coaster ride of guilt, redemption, love, growth and the test of a family’s strength under pressure that should have changed the carbon in their bodies into diamonds. The clarity of the author’s voice prevents confusion for the reader even when the characters can see nothing but. Ms. Winfree’s style is charming and thoroughly engaging. This is a story that stays with you long after you’ve closed the book. I really loved this one.
