Sheridan hates Christmas since her father left one year during the holiday and her mother committed suicide the next. She spent the rest of her childhood in foster care. This year, she is determined to hide away with her favourite bottle and pretend it isn't happening. But her boss has decided that she has to spend the weeks leading up to Christmas with his grandson, whom she also hates, on a client's private island winning a big contract that is due for renewal.

Brady hasn't had an easy life. His parents died when he was young and he was raised by grandparents who had learned the lesson of giving a child everything they want. Brady has to work for what he has. Even his job, which he won't have if he can't make it work with Sheridan for two weeks on the island, was earned. He just doesn't know what is wrong with that girl. His grandfather adores her. She's an amazing sales person, probably the best in the company. But she hates him with a passion and he has no idea what he did to earn that. But two weeks of just them, the client, and his wife and he is sure he'll get to the bottom of it.

Sheridan is opinionated and dangerously self confident. She has no qualms about drinking and driving, saying she has a high resistance to alcohol. Her opinions of people are made on first sight and are based on what she knows of that person's life. Knowing that she had a rough childhood and almost everyone in the book other than Brady loves her, doesn't seem to make up for her being an arrogant and negative character, who it is difficult to relate to.

Brady is determined to find out what is wrong and deal with it even if he does have to put her over his knee to do it. Having also had a difficult childhood Brady is almost the opposite to Sheridan a much more loveable person.
