| Ellie didn’t have anywhere else to go so she went to her childhood home in New York. She was running from Matt, an abusive ex-boyfriend in Seattle. Her handicapped daughter, Grace, was hidden in a 6-week camp, located near her former residence, for kids with heart problems. Ellie had not been home since the funeral of her godfather, William, nine years ago. She, along with Gavin, inherited the home place.
Gavin’s grandfather had raised Ellie from the age of five. The kids grew up together and were very close friends until the night of William’s funeral. That night they surrendered to passion; when Ellie woke up, Gavin was gone. She never told him she was pregnant. The money she inherited at the death of her godfather disappeared early in Grace’s life. She faced costly surgeries and medications. Ellie worked two jobs until Matt managed to get her fired from both. She was scared, broke and worried about Grace when the taxi left her at the Prescott place. Gavin answered the door and told her she could not stay. Ms. Jules Bennett has written a fabulous story about two people who were social opposites. One seemingly had it all—the other, nothing. That is not unusual but I’ll guarantee that you will find this story both fascinating and spell-binding. I read through the night; I could not put it down. These two people had problems which had spanned nine years but they still had a bond. The supporting characters were so well written I could imagine I was in the room when various things happened. It was like pulling back a curtain and watching a play.. The myriad of interactions between all these people made their situations even more poignant. Bennett revealed answers brought up in the storyline in a unique manner which was stimulating and effective. She covered the enormous amount of information needed to feel part of the book in an interesting way that was not boring. I highly recommend this book. It is a beautifully written story with an amazing ending.
