| Sax Douchett was one of the walking wounded to hear his side of it. His SEAL team mates had been killed and he'd been captured. No matter what the folks said in his home town of Shelter Bay, Oregon, he wasn't a hero. But no one would listen. Not even Kara Conway, the town's sheriff since the death of her father. Sax's older brother, Cole, and Jared Conway had been best friends when they were growing up. But when Cole and Jared left for the Marines, Jared asked Sax to take care of Kara. Now Jared was dead and his son, Trey, was growing up without a father. And Sax could never forget his promise to Jared.
This is the first of the Shelter Bay novels and a great one to begin the series, but then, it's hard to expect any less from JoAnn Ross. I've been a fan of her writing for a very long time. The setting, a small coast town on the Oregon coast is a perfect setting for a friendly town with an unfriendly murderer on the loose. Kara's background of being a sheriff's daughter and a policewoman herself in California while Jared was deployed gives her all the credentials to be the new sheriff and she's very believable in her role in the story. When this character tells the big, bad former SEAL to stay out of it when things get rough, she has the skills to back it up. On the other hand, Sax is no wimp either. His role in the past was to be there for Kara, no matter what. Now, with a murder targeting her, he wonders if he can overcome both Jared's ghost, and the ones in his own mind, to find a place in Kara and Trey's life. The whole story was very realistic to me, plenty of supporting characters in the town to make it interesting, and a mystery to be solved. The two main characters are very believable and ones you want for your new neighbors. I can't wait for the next book in the series so I can visit Shelter Bay again.
