Kayla Jardane's planet is dying without Krystallum, and it's all because of Hobard's evil and the Colony Management Council's refusal to investigate her planet's claims. Her father went to the CMC to try to reason with them, and ended up being executed as a result. This is why she and her brothers have joined revolutionaries intent on stealing the Krystallum that powers their agrospheres. But Kayla has far more personal reasons for rebelling than just those crimes.

While on Colony III, Hobard's planet and home to the Krystallum, the revolutionaries, Kayla included, are split up. Kayla flees Hobard's Searchers, only to find herself caught by a Hunter...who doesn't act as she expects.

Hostage Hearts was actually a little better than I expected. I thought this would be a largely romance-centered romance, and even though romance was the primary force in the storyline, it was the plots involving the Hunter, Dolph Raynard, and Hobard kept the pace of the story going. While I can't say this was a romance with the strongest elements of sci-fi that sci-fi romance can have, it did make some of the sci-fi moments vivid in my mind. I enjoy a book that can give descriptions just detailed enough for a mental picture without bogging the story down. As for the romance, it seemed to advance naturally between Kayla and Dolph, even though it was at a slightly accelerated pace. However, sometimes the actions of the villains didn't make a lot of sense to me; one villain pursued Kayla even though she, specifically, wasn't necessary to his plans and motivations. Characterization of Kayla and Dolph, as it should be with a slightly longer book, was fairly detailed. I didn't feel like Kayla and Dolph were just one-dimensional characters, or just any characters from a random book. They seemed fleshed-out enough to keep me interested in their motives and to seem unique to the story. Hostage Hearts, overall, was an entertaining read. It's worth a read if you want a little light science-fiction romance.
