This is the story of Karn Borden, a private investigator in Manhattan who works for her father at Borden & Company, and James Berg, Jr. who works at Berg & Son, an engineering firm owned by his father. Karn is investigating an industrial spy at Berg & Son who has stolen bid information and designs. Karn and James have known each other since childhood. James has just returned from six years in San Francisco and was Karn's first love. Karn worked closely with JP, James' father, who was like a loving uncle to her. In her investigation work, Karn assumes many disguises as she plays many different characters. James came back to take over his father's company. Karn and JP had weekly meetings about the case and they invited James to bring him up-to-date. Karn realized she wanted James. Someone at Berg & Son was feeding information to a competitor. James and Karn began working together on the case to find out who the spy was.

Karn and James are like people I know. They're established professionals who are at an age where they're thinking of settling down. They had a young love and both wonder now that they're adults if there are still feelings between them. Their parents have been friends since college and would love nothing better than for Karn and James to get together. The industrial spy case throws them together and as they pursue the challenge of uncovering the spy, will they uncover a renewed love as well. I enjoyed the characters of Karn and James. You see the young adults, the contemporary adults, the professionals, the protectiveness of James toward Karn and finally the team of James and Karn. There are also three supporting characters that really stand out in the story and in the writing of their characters - JP Berg (James' father), Matthew Borden (Karn's father), and Mick Saleari (a childhood friend of James and Karn whose parents worked for the Bergs, James' parents). This was an enjoyable story that was not at all predictable. I recommend it to everyone.
