She calls herself Julia Reeves. She arrives at a desert spa in a rented red Lamborghini. She is treating herself to a little vacation from a 25 year marriage that is something less than she had hoped. She needs some spa treatments, some luxury, some adventure. And she has hired a lover from the internet to help her find what has been missing in her Minnesota married life.

She’s 46. She has toned her body and managed the financing of her getaway with a little help from her sister. Husband Ralph thinks she is visiting family. Julia’s inheritance started Ralph’s business, but he sees her more as a possession than a partner. He just bought a hunting lodge without her knowledge – and her name is not on the deed! She needs to assert her independence and realize her fantasies - if only for a weekend.

She calls the hunk she has hired “William.” And he is more than she would have hoped for. He is very skilled in his “career.” He is also a would-be grad student with a background in philosophy. Their bodies mesh, and so do their minds.

This is a fascinating and well-written story, embracing the fantasies of many women. Who doesn’t want a little luxury, a lot of physical attention, and a sense of power?

Julia asks for information about William’s other clients, wanting to know more of the women who have purchased his services. William censors his answers somewhat, but the details are fascinating.

Hidden Springs Spa is described in lush detail, as is the lovely California Desert. The characters are somewhat mysterious, but thoroughly believable. The conclusion is highly satisfying, even though it raises questions about the future. There is much to ponder and enjoy in this story of feminine empowerment and the life of a very intelligent and likable gigolo.

This is Kathryn Jordan’s debut as a novelist. I for one, am anxiously awaiting more!
