How would you feel if everything you ever thought about your father was a lie? That he had a secret life that both your mother and father kept from you? Hannah knows and after inheriting the cottage that he built for her, she has much to think about. Finding letters he wrote for her has her questioning her life. Is that a lie too? The truth eventually reveals itself and is almost to much for Hannah in her fragile state. Her late father's partner is another puzzle and she knows he's keeping things from her too.

Jake, an ex-CIA agent, plans to keep his promise to his late partner if it's the last thing he does. As he grows to know Hannah, respect turns to desire but he refuses to act upon it. Then there is a matter of dealing with the woman who killed his partner and shot him in the leg. Nevertheless, when desire turns to love and the hunter becomes the hunted, keeping Hannah safe becomes his utmost priority even if it means losing her.

Maggie Toussaint pens a well-written and highly emotional story. For me the action/suspense didn't come soon enough. I became bogged down with Hannah's ridged personality. I found her annoying at times, however, she was made of sterner stuff and came through in the end in a way that had me cheering "go Hannah". Jake was an interesting character, honorable but also irritating on occasion. However, I felt his pain, from not only his injury and the loss of his friend, but also his childhood and his feelings of unworthiness. Maggie is a talented writer, her characters and settings are vividly portrayed and come to life through her writing. Many scenes show how thoroughly Maggie researches the subject matter for her stories. I recommend this book to readers who love a novel that pulls at the heart strings with a side order of suspenseful action.
