At the end of 1882, the untamed American West had earned a reputation as dangerous. The line between the good and the bad is narrow. Lives are worth less than horses and the law is written in the blood of those who came before them. The only ones keeping it from being total chaos are the men who swear to uphold the law. U.S. Marshals Flynn and Washington are escorting two prisoners to New Orleans for trial, when forces come against them; they have to make a choice between playing by the rules or trusting the men they are supposed to bring to justice.

Let me start by saying that while I am not normally a big fan of westerns, Ms. Roux has written an exceptionally good story that will appeal to a wide range of readers. The picture she paints of the old west is vivid and you can imagine the dusty streets crowded with wagons and horses and of course the old paddle boats, where lives hinged on a man's word. The characters are well developed and each has their own distinct personality, from the brash but likeable Flynn, the optimistic Washington "Wash", the stoic Cage and the sarcastic and quirky "Rose", the author weaves a tale of life and love in an era where a man lived by his own code of honor. I really enjoyed the way "Rose" interacted with the other characters from good naturedly antagonizing Flynn to have deep meaningful one-sided conversations with Cage. I also like how Cage seemed to say so much without uttering a word. The author did a good job of bringing out his emotions and thoughts. There are some m/m situations in the story but they are tastefully written and go well with the context of the story. I think this is another great book by the author and I will continue to look for further stories from her maybe even a continuation of this one.
