The mating cycle is approaching. Jaran, ruler of Icarus, must not only choose compatible matches between his people, but also for himself. As the last full-blooded Icarian within mating age, he does the last thing anyone expects. "I have chosen you as my mate." Laramee Faulkner is the only human with wings, teased and taunted since childhood that she will never fit in. How can Jaran, her worst tormentor, convince her that all he has ever wanted was her? Even if he accepts her, will the world accept a human as a co-ruler?

The novella Icarus Unbound was quite pleasant. In the beginning chapter the reader gets a glimpse into the major process of Icarian children. All children, at the age of ten, bond with symbions, a headless bird, in order to receive their wings. The process was actually very thorough and made sense. You also see why Lara is vulnerable and sensitive. She is the only full-blooded human child to receive wings. She was raised with all the Icarian customs but none of the Icarian blood. Her doubts and issues made absolute sense. Our hero, Jaran, was Lara's main tormentor. He is also the ruler of Icarus. The last full-blooded Icarian, Jaran has complete confidence in himself. Throughout the book it is made very clear that he wants Lara. As leader, he decrees her as his mate. But by doing so, has caused unrest in the Icranian population that is basically on the brink of extinction. He is willing to do or give up anything in order to keep her. The author, Ms.Gardner does a very thorough job of creating personalities that stay true to her characters throughout the book.
