Mackinac Island is a popular summer destination for both the very wealthy “cottage” owners and the "fudgies" who take home large quantities of the sweet that gives them their name. In the winter the island is virtually cut off from the rest of the world by the ice that surrounds it. Residents can cross the Ice Bridge; a marked path from the island to the mainland, but that can be dangerous. When a dear friend is lost in the ice, Charlotte and her police officer friend Mac are determined to find out whether or not the elderly Hannah was a victim of an accident or murder.

Mackinac Island in the winter makes for a unique and wonderful setting for a murder mystery. The year round population is very small and relatively close knit which can either help or hinder an investigation. The victim has no known enemies and a bit of money. There may or may not be some distant relations. The identity of the suspect is known fairly early in the story, but the suspense is really in the catching of the killer. Charlotte’s research about the ghost stories of the island and her own ghostly encounters make the story more interesting, and the sweet romance between Mac and Charlotte grows slowly but surely throughout the story. I also loved the descriptions of the “cottages” and the luxurious Grand Hotel. Mackinac sounds like an interesting place and this story will make the reader want to make the trip.
