| Karl Gustavson is watching the small crowd file
through the bookstore next to his Viking Museum and
gift shop. Rose Jacobsen is signing copies of her
newest book, Ravished by Ragnar. A customer leaves a
copy in the bookstore and Karl is offended by the
author's depiction of the Vikings, in this particular
scene, having a rape contest. He decides to sue, and
founds the Viking Defamation League. He gets a lot of
press and the case soon goes to trial. Rose is a
former history teacher. Although she writes erotica,
her books are loosely based on historical
possibilities. Unfortunately, she finds herself in a
courtroom in Minnesota full of Viking Americans. She
truly feels badly about insulting the Viking heritage
and goes to the museum to apologize. Karl touches an
ancient rune stone and channels his Viking heritage,
forcefully making love to Rose, while his sister sings
Valkyrie arias. Every time someone touches the stone,
they become very Viking. Karl's sister Ingrid
actually gets arrested at a funeral. Apparently she
and the minister were so affected by the stone, they
almost recreated the scene at the gift shop at a local
funeral!
This was an entertaining short shory, but I found Rose's book excerpts more interesting than this story. There were several funny plot twists, but overall, it kind of suspended belief, especially the scene on the gift shop sofa. A fun short story.
