| Raine Spencer is a half-breed battery working for the Council of Wardens, the leading body of the Covenant. Mad Jack Madden is just that -- mad. Or so they say. He’s lost his faith in the Covenant after being accused of a crime he didn’t commit and his magic taken away. But the Covenant breaks their own rules when getting their hands on certain artifacts becomes more important than playing nice. Hence Raine’s assignment as a magical surrogate to the handicapped Jack, giving him the magic he needs to find some very vital artifacts. But this is just the beginning of the ‘game’ of the Gods as it is referred to. Everyone has an agenda, everyone has a plan and they are all out for themselves.
Raine is a woman determined to follow the rules and become a Knight of the Covenant. She’s kickass, very Xena Warrior Princess Style. She's a strong woman a reader can identify with. When Jack taps into all the magic inside her, it gets her high -- almost like a human on cocaine. This of course leads to a necessary release -- which becomes one of the best sex scenes I’ve read in a very long time. I wish I could kill the power in Manhattan with an orgasm! This book is a great time, steaming with action and sexuality. It is difficult to follow along at times with so many different games being played because it’s unclear who’s agenda is what. If you love delving deep into strong and complicated worlds, this is definitely a long soak. Some of the fight scenes are unclear as well, whose sword is where and if they’re surrounded by goons why are they stopping to have a heart to heart? These drawbacks didn’t stop me from enjoying Raine and Jack’s dance and the fun along the way.
