| Darach MacRath spent his dying moments watching his infant son slaughtered and his wife raped by a man he'd called kinsman. Because of his righteous nature and untimely death, Darach is handpicked by the Archangel Michael to serve mankind as an Immortal, a warrior who hunts the demons that walk the earth in search of human frailty. When he comes across Abigail Dupree in a New Orleans alley going hand to hand with a demon, he is more than a little shocked that a mortal woman has knowledge of demons and their ilk. He's also a lot surprised that his normally dormant emotions have picked this moment to make themselves heard.
This is by far Ms. Smith's best work to date. Her growth as an author took a massive leap with Immortal Justice. A book that starts with heartbreaking tragedy, Immortal Justice takes the reader on a ride through the entire emotional spectrum. With well thought out and likeable characters, witty dialogue, sexual tension and action packed drama, this is a superb debut to what is hopefully a long running series. I could find no fault with the story or any of the Immortals introduced in the book. Truth be told, they are as fascinating a group of characters as any being written today. The villain, Angus was especially heinous, although he did have a James Bond moment at the end. You know, where the villain saves the real torture and killing for an audience instead of going ahead and just doing it, only to be foiled at the last minute. The only real complaint I had (and this is one of my pet peeves) is that the plot hinged on the heroine doing something she knew better than to do, thus resulting in her capture. My ideal heroines usually exercise a little more thought before acting. That was my only eye twitch moment. In all other areas this was a wonderfully entertaining book that I very highly recommend and fervently hope to see a sequel soon.
