| Elisa is a high school student, with all the usual concerns of all girls of her age -- family, boyfriends, school. One day, though, she finds herself in an entirely different time: the Rome of the Borgias and she has to learn how to survive in a world which is completely different from her own. While desperately seeking a solution to go back to her time, two young men fight for her love -- the charming but wicked Cesare Borgia and Cristiano, honest and loyal. The former is ready to kill to have her, while the latter would give his life for her. Who will conquer her heart?
I had a hard time reading this book simply because it is a translated version. Since a lot of words or phrases do not translate well, it became difficult to figure out what the author was trying to say. I am also attaching a warning to this book; it is not for the faint of heart. It has scenes of incestuous relationships that result in pregnancy. However, once you can get past that the book is fast paced enough that you will not be bored and enough intrigue to make it all entertaining. Elisa finds herself drawn to Cesare at first mainly because he is dangerous, but soon learns that it is Christiano that she can trust. All she wants to do is get home, but Cesare does everything in his power to keep her. She, with the help of Christiano, must find a way to outwit Cesare to get back to her time. Ms. Gay does a great job creating ancient Rome and sticking to the majority of historical facts. She creates characters that could have lived in that time while at the same time giving readers all that we could ever want in a story. Overall, I enjoyed this book, but wish it would have translated better.
