Angela Blake had a heart transplant a couple of years ago and she is tired of everyone treating her like an invalid so she is thrilled at the opportunity to be the lead auditor for an interim audit of a local company. What she doesn’t expect is H. P. “Hank” Renard the new CEO of the company she is doing the audit for. He is extremely attractive and seems to dislike her immediately. Angela needs to do well on this job to be considered for a promotion and she doesn’t need anything from a man like Hank. However as the audit progresses, strange accidents begin to happen around. Is someone trying to hurt her and why? Angela and Hank also feel an unadvisable yet undeniable attraction to one another.

In a Heartbeat by Donna Richards is a very well done romantic thriller. Throughout the story the reader gets a peek at what one bad guy is up to but Angela is totally unaware of him and he isn’t the only one causing her problems. Someone else wants to harm Angela too and there are a number of potential suspects to choice from. Then there is the budding romance between Angela and Hank that is on a collision course with prior commitments on Hank’s part to another woman and Angela’s idea of what constitutes proper business ethics.

I thoroughly enjoyed the characters of Angela and Hank and there is quite a bit of humor around their ill-advised romantic attraction to one another. Both characters are strong willed and independent with firm ties to their family and a commitment to living up to their word making them likable and worthy of my attention. There are also some fun secondary characters to aide in keeping the story interesting. This story grabbed my attention from the beginning and I enjoyed it all the way to the end. I have never read anything by Ms. Richards before but I will watch for other books by her. I enjoyed her style, her humor, and her ability to keep the reader guessing until the end of the story!
