When their mother falls from her balcony, her children are thrust into a nightmare, their mother is dead and the father may be the murderer.

Kate Lange is the lawyer assigned to defend their father, her boss Randall Barrett. Randall had a bad history with his ex-wife and they had recently argued and he also has problems with his temper. With limited criminal law experience Kate has to find a way to clear her boss and help bring the family back together. As Kate races against time to stay ahead of the prosecution a silent predator is waiting to deliver the final blow.

This was an incredible book. It's one of those stories that will keep you up reading all night just see what will happen next. I found myself feeling what the characters were probably feeling. At times I was tense and almost holding my breath to see what happens next and at other times I could feel Kate and Randall's frustration and despair at everything not being cut and dried and easily put away. I especially liked the character of Kate she is a complicated, intelligent and extremely resilient woman who is likeable, which is something not always easy to find in stories today. The author did a wonderful job writing a smart, driven likeable woman. The secondary characters are all so well written that you can't help be drawn in to their lives and circumstances, some of them are new and some of the character were in the previous book in the series. It is not necessary to read the first book in the series to enjoy this one, but it does help to give a more depth to the characters that are returning. If you are a big fan of emotionally charged thrillers this is definitely the book for you. It is the perfect read for these long winter nights.
