Lady Barbara Childe is no longer considered a youth at the age of twenty-five and a widow of three years. At seventeen, she had married to oblige her family a man three times her age. She really didn’t mourn much when he died; in fact she hardly grieved at all anymore, many considering her heartless. She had beauty and charm that many considered deadly. Her conquests became innumerable to the point that men would do almost anything for her before learning she didn’t really care for them. Then the war with the French and Allied forces causes a shift in Barbara after she starts a courtship with Colonel Charles Audley. The Colonel knows of her reputation but that doesn’t stop him for falling for her. He even proposes marriage to her. When the Battle of Waterloo takes center stage, Barbara and Charles are caught in the revolving war. In no time, Barbara is pulling her weight caring for the wounded which prompts her to see the real meaning of death and love. In time of bloody war with so many casualties, it is hard for two people to be find that happy-ever-after but through the roughest of times, Barbara and Charles find a bit of peace with each other.

An Infamous Army is an elegant style of tale. The audience is not only transported into the gala events of balls and parties, they get a glimpse of the battlefield, and all the cavalry attacks of war. Of loved ones wounded, lost and the fields sprinkled with blood. A feel of the ambience of the era is felt in practically every turn of the page. Barbara goes through many roles that one can see her emotions change in many ways. I love the way Charles cares for her no matter the conditions. The ending is so touching and beautiful; I don’t think I will ever forget its memory. Ms. Heyer goes above and beyond with the descriptions of the events. She pens a poignant tale with the onset of war and its affects on loved one. She molds Barbara is a way to rise to the occasion and learn where the heart really is in this breathtaking read.
