Twenty-five-year-old Nika Jacks tries to make it in the mostly male world of Hotshots, an elite wilderness firefighting unit. She's petite, but tough and determined to succeed. Some crew members deeply resent a woman's presence on the team and make efforts to thwart her.

Nika meets handsome Colby Gaines during orientation; they become buddies. A friend from her childhood named Brian is also on the scene. And so is her Smokejumper ex-husband Scott Rainey. Scott cheated on her, but he wants her back. Then there's J.T. Riley, a member of the convict crew whose sensuality draws Nika from the instant they meet.

A crew boss who taunts Nika dies in an apparent heart attack. She gets creepy love notes. Her dedication and sense of humor win her some friends, but it is obvious she's in danger.

Michelle Perry has given us an interesting look at the world of firefighters, Nika is well-drawn and likable. Some of the other characters could have been fleshed out more. Nika's bunkmate Cathy could have been given more history and personality. Various other members of the cast are also indistinct.

The mystery itself is resolved in a satisfactory manner. The clues are subtle and reasonable. The setting itself is superb -- the dangers faced by a fire crew are clear and compelling.
