| Initiation is the story of sixteen year-old Rachel Clancy, born with a specific set of genes that let her fight monsters. She has trained her entire life to kill vampires and werewolves. Knowing since birth what her destiny would be has not made the onslaught of emotions she faces as she journeys upwards any easier. Rachel isn't prepared for the level of deception she faces, and before long she will find herself on a quest she is in no way prepared to handle. She will learn beyond a shadow of a doubt that sometimes the monsters we know are worse than the ones we don't and that love can surprise us when it comes from somewhere we never anticipated it. If she lives, she will be a warrior. If she doesn't, no one will ever remember her name.
I found this book to be very entertaining. Rachel is a strong young woman, but she doesn't know it until she faces each challenge that is thrown at her. She grows a little more with each new challenge while losing her heart to a "monster" and having that heart broken in the space of a few days. She learns that not all the monsters are actual monsters and that not all of the people around her want her to succeed. However, this does not stop her from completing her task as best she can and fight when she needs to. Ms. Royce did a superb job with this story. It has elements of romance, suspense, and twists at every turn. I would definitely recommend this to others because it is a sweet coming of age story with plots that will keep you on your toes while sharing the emotions of Rachel as she experiences every new thing from love to terror and every emotion in between.
