Garth has lived in the shadows all his life. Unloved, unwanted and untouched by his parents, he believes that he is 'wrong'. His skin is green and he's been told for as long as he can remember that he's a monster. Allowed out only at night, Garth has watched the others in the village from afar. One beautiful young man in particular has interested him. Evin creates feelings that Garth can't identify. When Garth rescues him from an attack, Evin is unsettled but intrigued by his new friend. Their relationship develops into much more as they learn about each other. Under Evin's gentle touch, Garth finds himself just as Garth's devotion heals Evin's pain. Their love continues to grow but Garth was created for a reason and when the time comes to unleash his power, Evin and Garth will be used by opposing sides of an epic battle for power. One will be charged with destroying the other. Can their love overcome their destiny or is it too late for both of them?

This was a difficult story to read at times. It's heartbreaking, inspiring, touching and harsh. Garth is an amazing character. His innocence and innate goodness is beautifully portrayed. I've seldom read more touching scenes than those early ones between Evin and Garth. The book is almost two different stories and they each have a different feel. The first story is touching romance between two damaged young men who find salvation in each other's arms. The second story is a magic-filled fantasy. The action is fast-paced and the backdrop, richly detailed. Garth and Evin are separated during this part of the story and I did find some of the plot to be a bit confusing. A lot is going on simultaneously. Sex scenes abound in this tale. That could be a plus or minus depending on your preference. There's some extraordinary writing here as well as two unforgettable characters. Yes, the story does get bogged down in the second half but the book still worked for me. The author's development of Garth and Evin's relationship is truly inspired. It will touch you deeply. Not an easy read but well worth it. I look forward to reading more from Mr. Edwards.
