| In book 9 of the Tempe Crabtree Mystery series, the Native American deputy finds herself investigating the murder of a popular young man, whose body is discovered near an addiction recovery center on the Bear Creek Indian Reservation. Most of the locals believe an outsider who is dating the man's cousin is the killer but Tempe discovers things are not as cut and dried as everyone would like and the victim was not quite what he seemed. During the course of the investigation her curiosity is spurred on by a belligerent ex-military extremist setting up a compound just outside of the reserve. Tempe would like to solve the crime and spend time with her husband and her son and his friend who are home for the holidays but can she discover the killer before someone else is killed?
This was a very fast and enjoyable cozy read. There is nothing I like more then when my mysteries come complete with realistic characters and a plausible puzzle and that is just what this story provides. Tempe and her family are so genuine and I love the glimpses the reader gets to life on the Bear Creek Reservation. The fact that Tempe's husband is a minister interweaves a layer of faith throughout the story but you also get glimpses of Native spiritualism but these references are subtle and the center stage of this story is definitely the mystery. Our leading lady is appealing, definitely a strong woman and while she has a warm heart she is definitely not a cream puff. She is a no nonsense woman doing her job. I enjoyed the fact that there were so many suspects to choose from and that each of them had a valid motive. I loved the main suspect he was such a likable character and I felt so sorry for the position he ends up in. If you are already a Deputy Crabtree fan you will definitely like her latest adventure and if you aren't I think this story will make you a fan. This author has definitely earned a spot on my must-read list. I highly recommend this entertaining story.
