| Rafe has been a vampire for only three years and in that time he managed to keep it from his mother and find a human blood slave he loves more than anything. But Adam isn't willing to give up his humanity and his family to become vampire and bonded to Rafe for an eternity. Using the excuse of a new job, he moved to DC.
Home for Christmas with his family, Adam hears about the death of Rafe's mother. Knowing they will end up in bed, he still goes to offer comfort to his one time lover. Still not willing to give up his family, he plans on spending as much time as he can with Rafe then returning to his boring life in DC. Knowing that Adam is going to leave him again doesn't stop Rafe from letting his heart get involved. But taking on a new job in vampire sect will give him something to take his mind off it when Adam leaves him for the second time in six months. He just hopes Adam realises sooner rather than later that by living in DC, he has lost all he loves anyway. Although this is book 2 in the series, neither of these characters are featured in the first story, so it could be read alone. It also increases our knowledge of the vampire world from the first book, making the head vampire even more tempting. Rafe's an adorable character. He loves Adam enough to let him go and is loyal to his vampire sect to the point of giving up everything to help keep them safe. Adam's indecisions make you want to shake him, his love for Rafe and his family are endearing and he eventually realises he doesn't have to lose one to have the other.
