Isabelle and the Outlaw (Through the Garden Gate)

Loretta C. Rogers
Historical romance
Available from The Wild Rose Press
December 2007

Dr. Isabelle Landers’ life is determined by Murphy’s Law. She buried her mom, her ex-husband, Andrew, found another woman, and she did not receive full tenure in her position as Assistant Professor of American History. With so much turmoil in her life, she decided to take a trip to Bury Lancaster, England. Circumstances were certainly not as she expected. And then, she found a gate and stepped through it, straight into 1870 Arizona and the Apache settlement.

Isabelle was especially intrigued with the 1870 story of Rafael Sinclair, an undercover agent for the Pinkertons, but when he was captured with part of the gang he infiltrated, the telegraph never came which would have saved his life. When he did not die when he was hung, he escaped and went to his friend, Chato, the Apache chief in Arizona.

This time-travel novel is very well written with exciting characters and plenty of tension. I was shocked at some of the actions which took place—from 2007 back to 1870 and then, back again, into 2007. Ms. Rogers has done a great job of executing the situations and keeping them from becoming confusing. The plot was composed to show maximum awareness of what the basic concept of the story should be.

I really liked this book. It had twists and turns and some intricate surprises. Even the last few pages were still offering newness and unexpected closure. I highly recommend this book whether you like historical or contemporary. It’s all in there!
