Nightwalkers are supernatural races in touch with the magic of earth elements and who are virtually immortal. Jacob is the Enforcer, the demon lawman whose name is whispered to make children behave. No one can escape Jacob. Making love with humans is strictly taboo. Even when the full moon heightens the allure demons feel toward them, no excuse is acceptable. For 700 years Jacob has been immune to the madness, even when the strongest succumb. So how can Jacob explain his infatuation for Bella and his flaunting of the strictest law of demon culture? Fate has other plans for Jacob and Isabella.

Every so often I read a new paranormal and think Wow! Jacob is one of them. The theme of demons is not new but Jacquelyn Frank has put a new spin on the concept. These demons are more like some of the romanticized vampire themes where their entire society and culture is totally misunderstood by humans. The villains in this series are magic-users or necromancers who find ancient spells to summon demons and enslave them. Necromancers is a term normally used for those who can summon the dead, but it’s appropriate in this supernatural world because summoning causes horrible torture and even death. Normally the demon society stays hidden from human culture, following their own strict laws and policing their own. Jacob has been the Enforcer for hundreds of years. However, when fate has him cross paths with Isabella nothing can stop the attraction he feels for her. Bella is a quiet but strong woman who has always felt different. The fact she is a librarian and loves ancient texts fits seamlessly into the household of Jacob’s friend and King. Both Jacob and Bella have issues to overcome and I enjoyed the developments that surrounded their love story. Actually, all of the characters were engaging. The interaction between Bella and her sister in the beginning made me smile, the friendships among the demons drew me into their emotions and some of the dialogue between Bella and the ancients made me laugh out loud. There is intriguing elemental magic and some violence, as might be expected, but the overall feeling of this story was not dark. Although there were a few details that seemed unresolved, that in no way detracted from the story and in fact gives room for further development in the next book. I wholeheartedly recommend Jacob to anyone who enjoys a unique paranormal romance and look forward to more entertaining stories in Ms. Frank’s Nightwalker series.
