| Emma Hurst was a teacher at the high school that she attended as a kid. She was the perfect example of what can happen when unthinking/uncaring teens decide to humiliate another teen. Emma had a crush on Johnny Goode throughout school. She was, however, out of his league. He was a star football player; she was a nerdy brain. Her life was still scarred 15 years after her senior year of high school by Johnny’s public humiliation.
Johnny was attracted to Emma for years. His friends were never going to allow him to tarnish his reputation by dating a smart girl regardless of how pretty she was. He invited her to the Christmas dance their senior year. While they were there, he and his friends publically disgraced her. What he didn’t know was that after she walked home, she actually tried to kill herself. Ms. Mendoza has written a poignant book about what can happen when kids act inappropriately. The manner in which she brought these two people together had to be orchestrated by God. These characters were dynamic, yet scarred. The main couple had so many issues to resolve and they were struggling to forgive and forget. How Mendoza presented this plot and the solutions were spellbinding. The myriad of supporting characters were so well developed and it made this storyline even more believable. The struggles in forgiveness showed how important God was in the lives of these young teachers. I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to everyone.
