| Lily McInness, money manager extraordinaire, never forgets an ex-husband -- and she has a couple. So when ex hubbie #1, Lester Le Crie, calls to beg Lily to bail him out of jail, she is there for him. But when he disappears, Lily finds herself spending her days searching for Lester, her evenings running his successful chi-chi restaurant, and what's left of her time with a certain very handsome police superintendent who might just be trying out to be hubby #3. The only way to get things back on an even keel is to find Les.
Brit Ryan's story was compelling from the first page. Lily is a character with heart who places herself in harm's way again and again because she can't say no to anyone who asks for her help. Even though her first two marriages ended in divorce, she has managed to remain friends with both men and still cares deeply for them. The supporting cast adds a lot to the story. Jerome and Pierre of Le Crie's are loyal to a fault. Even the mobsters had a few good points, although they had a lot more bad ones. Their machinations add a lot of suspense to the story and keep Lily on her toes. Frank Panetta and his son are more than the average bad guys. The romantic interest in this story takes an equal role to the suspense, with Paul Mascara there to provide interest and sex appeal. There is a lot of heat between these two Paul and Lily, and the reader has high hopes that Lily is ready and willing to try love again. I want to be Lily when I grow up. She's gorgeous, successful, and all the boys like her. Maybe too much. But it's something I would try to learn to live with. I am delighted that this is Book 1 because I am anxiously awaiting Book 2.
