Curran was turned into the J'Tar on his fifth birthday. He was willing to undergo the rather brutal ceremony in which a Jaxtar cat would attack him, and his spirit and body merged with it afterwards. His duty is to guard his brother, the Zanath, ruler of Rubiya for the rest of his life. But because he is the J'Tar, a shapeshifter, he is not allowed to have children, or to marry. Oberroth, however, doesn't want his brother to spend his life alone because of an antiquated duty. So when the delegation from Mabrelle arrives, with a young woman Curran seems to take an interest in, Oberroth begins plotting for marriage and children. Curran, however, wants nothing to do with it, while the woman, Amara, is very interested in Curran and very curious about the J'Tar.

J'Tar is part of ImaJinn's new erotic romance line, and it does live up to it. In fact, it's very, very hot. I would caution some readers about the borderline bestiality (Curran makes love to Amara in beast form), but I didn't find it disturbing since the author made it quite clear the Curran was still human in mind and spirit. Sometimes the writing was a bit awkward, mainly in character development, specifically when Amara was shown as a strong woman, yet seemed passive during certain interactions, but I enjoyed the story, as well as the conflict about Curran being J'Tar. I also enjoyed how the author showed how being J'Tar affected his developing relationship with Amara and with other characters. Erotic romance lovers will likely find plenty of heat in this story to satisfy them and I plan on following this author's work. I've already bought the second story in this series.
