Taking the familiar setting of a country fair in your average small American town, Ms. Karland then imbues it with all the sexual excitement a reader can handle. The relationship progresses quickly between Laura and Jake, but it never feels forced, and it's obvious they've had feelings for one another for a long time. What better opportunity to let those emotions ignite than on the 4th of July?
