We begin with Gus, Jerald and Charlie, the ‘uncles’, watching the neighbor across the street lose his nanny. So far, the neighbor has lost four or five nannies and our three gentlemen seem to keep him and the neighborhood under watch. Our neighbor across the street is Dexter Morgan. Dexter’s sister has just passed away, right after giving birth to her twin daughters, leaving him their guardian and completely exhausted in general. This is the point Crystal Jorgensen enters to bring a dinner to her ‘uncles’. They are in their eighties and she tries to take care of them. They also try to take care of her, especially since her breast cancer is now in remission. Crystal’s uncles suggest she head over to the neighbor’s house to see if she can help. She goes, and wow does she ever help! She falls in love with his nieces (and eventually with him) but doesn’t tell him about her cancer, ex-husband, or really about anything. Dex is a truly exhausted man. He hasn’t even been able to grieve his sister yet, and until Crystal came over his nieces hadn’t stopped crying. I think one of the most heartbreaking aspects of this story is the fact that Crystal says it is a temporary job since she is afraid her cancer will return. Ms. Keaton does an incredible job telling this tale without negativity and feeling as if Crystal was actually about to die. Crystal is not about to die, and it is almost humorous when her doctor’s office calls to schedule an appointment without informing her about what. No, she doesn’t die and she isn’t about to either. I loved the ‘uncles’, the twins, and I really loved both Dex and Crystal. Ms. Keaton showed us their ups and downs, threw in some hot lovemaking and made it a page turning extravaganza. I love her books, and I love this one!
