| This review is hard for me to write because I am not sure what I have just read! The book actually consisted of two stories: Love and War in Lost River and Kayla Finds Her Way. The first story was set in a sleepy little settlement in 1873 when the local townsfolk had formed a militia to fight the Modoc Indians. Jim Campbell was involved in the militia, but when a young Indian boy was caught and facing hanging, Jim fought his neighbors to save the kid’s life.
The other story, about Kayla, was years later, and her grandmother was that young woman, Lois Campbell, who, with her husband, had left Lost River during the 1870s. After her husband died, she came back to Lost River and lived with her granddaughter, Kayla. Kayla’s main goal in life was to leave the sleepy little town. While working at the Lost River Motel, her new boss, John Blacksmith, himself an Indian, became more than just a boss to her. These stories were decidedly confusing. They told very short stories which had implicit sexual scenes and were tastefully done; however, the sex scenes seemed to be the story to me. The narratives were basically well thought out and very interesting. However, I felt as if something happened to interrupt the story. It just feels incomplete to me.
