Kera has been instructed by her father to always obey him and never once shed a tear. At a very young age she suffered an accident with her leg and now has a severe limp along with a disease known as Rhinehart's dystrophy, that will eventually put her in a wheelchair. But still she must do what is required of her or suffer the consequence. Her father is a preacher and demands obedience as well as constant reading of the scriptures. When they arrive on an alien planet she is not to mix with the people because she is of human form, but the king's son desires her. As the years pass, she and the king's son grow older and in a drunken stupor he goes in to her. But Kera only submissively lies still as she has been coached all those years. When she finds herself pregnant, she refuses to tell her father for fear of punishment. After chaos erupts and her father is killed she flees, but the king's son has her followed and takes the child, causing her to go into an even deeper depression. Even having a man by the name of Jon, come to her rescue cannot aid her helplessness or the insufferable abuse she has undergone through the years.

Jon will not allow Kera to be harmed after he finds that she is being mistreated. He takes her into his care and soon marries her. After he and Kera begin having relations, he doesn't understand why she is lifeless and doesn't want children. At first he is hurt that she won't touch him but when he later learns the psychological reason behind it; he feels guilty for pushing her so hard. Can he help her get over the sordid past so they can finally have a loving future together?

KERA is a remarkable read. I was so impressed with the intelligence and strong will of Kera. Her life had been filled with so many unspeakable acts, yet she continued to surpass obstacles. She buried things inside her mind and was robotic many times over but never giving up. I especially loved the way she and Jon stayed together and tried to work things out. She wanted to please her husband in so many ways and that was very commendable.

Anna Parrish has penned a story that inflicts pain, anguish, sorrow and love. She has told a story of a young girl that even though molested, continued to push herself daily. A story that made me want to pull Kera through the pages and embrace her tenderly. There were so many moments that I reached for tissues. This is a story that is so true in so many ways. It is a well written book that I highly recommend.
