| On the eve of her arranged wedding to Lord Eadward her dream man comes to Lady Juliana of Ballemare and agrees to grant her request for adventure. Little does she knows she's getting involved with the very tricky King Merrick of the Unblessed. He rules over the mischief makers who wreak havoc in the land of those who are neither blessed nor damned. Not knowing what happened, her brothers Hugh and Thomas along with the son of her murdered fiancé set off to bring her home. They all become embroiled in a battle among those who are being manipulated by a being whose thirst for power knows no boundaries.
Michelle M. Pillow weaves a story that grabs the reader from the very first page. King Merrick is one of those characters who tries so hard to be bad or good but can't quite pull off either. He's so enchanted by Juliana he vacillates between wanting to love her and trying to force her to depend on him. Lady Juliana has grown up among her brothers and doesn't succumb well to manipulation. The men in the kingdom all seem to have a weakness that can be exploited. For some it's power, for others it's greed. And there are still others who want revenge and will make deals with the devil if they have to. There are many excellent characters who enhance the tale and priceless dialogue that helps to drive it all. Some of my favorites are the two sprights, Halton and Gorman. They may be tiny but witty exchanges follows whenever they appear. Queen Tania of the faie is astrong female character that I adore. The main characters and the story itself are crafted in such a unique way I couldn't stop reading. It titillates, tantalizes, and holds our interest throughout as the good the bad and the fence sitters have to make tough choices. This is a wonderful series.
