Shaun is a mutant with the ability to shape shift into a large white tiger. In his society, that means he is nothing more than a pet, forced to endure endless hours of programming before being sold to his master. He’d managed to get away from the labs, but he knew that he was in danger of being claimed every second that he was free. He was willing to take that risk because he never wanted that kind of captivity again, until he met Ashley.

Ashley had loved and lost, and thought that he would never be capable of that kind of relationship again. His former lover had been taken away because of his “unnatural” kindness, and he didn’t want to go through that pain again. Then he meets Shaun, and starts to think loving once more may be worth the risk.

I felt that I lost the thread of the story sometimes because things didn’t always match up. A good example of this is one minute they were sexually interested, the next it seemed like weeks before it happened again. Odd if they were as into each other as they were supposed to be. That and if one “pet” had been taken away, wouldn’t he run that risk again? I didn’t really understand why he didn’t get his first lover back if that was a possibility. Ashley seemed a little weak to be a dominant. But in the end the two seemed to be genuinely in love, and the story pulled me in and kept me interested. I thought the world they inhabited sounded really intriguing and wouldn’t have minded hearing more about how it worked. Kitten is an interesting look at a relationship that starts out one sided, and how each person copes with their side. Great story!
