It is 1455 AD, shortly before Christmas, and the land is covered with snow. Myles Donal leaves his father’s castle under protest to wed a woman known as the Harridan of the Highlands. He gets lost. He has to find shelter quickly or die. He stumbles upon a cabin inhabited by a young woman named Kendran. She has laryngitis and her health continues to worsen.

Kendran hates all men! Her mother and her sister hate men. Her father enjoys his position in life and constantly beats his women if they do not abide by his wishes. He has forced Kendran to become betrothed to an old man with no money but plenty of land. To keep from marrying him, Kendran ran to this particular cabin. Kendran is trying to recuperate from her illness. She has no food, not much firewood, and no plan as to how to continue surviving.

After their initial confrontation, Myles and Kendran settle into a precarious existence together. They become attracted to each other and spend several days dancing around their mutual magnetism. Finally, they fall in love. Myles knows that Kendran is the daughter of Lord Eschon and thinks she is the woman he was pledged to marry. He feels no remorse when he takes her virginity. He thinks they are soon to wed.

He leaves her at the cabin to go to her father’s home and finds he was wrong. There was another sister, Merriam! Then all hell breaks loose. The interactions between Myles and his betrothed, and his secret contact with Kendran, are spell-binding. The surprising ending is so unexpected that the last chapter is as riveting as the earlier sections. There are no slow parts and no disappointments. This book by Ms. Jackie Ivie is astonishing. This interesting and absorbing book is wholeheartedly recommended.
