| Kieran of Hawkesmere has returned from the horrors of the crusades to his family clan, probably in the late eleventh century. On the way home from raiding an enemy clan to kidnap his brother's betrothed wife he sees a woman coming out of the sea. To protect her from rape by his clansmen he claims she's a selkie and belongs to him. His brother's lust for Ariel makes them run for their safety. When Kieran in injured Ariel takes him to the all female, futuristic, undersea world of Halcyon.
I love the way Diana Bold compares and contrasts the world of Kieran's clan with the futuristic world Ariel has grown up in. One is low tech with men who treat their women like possessions to be used however they want. The other is high tech with women who allow no males in their world, going so far as to genetically alter any male sperm so only females are born. Both are narrow minded societies. Kieran and Ariel are human beings who refuse to be pigeonholed into the regimens of their society. Ms. Bold has done an excellent job showing Kieran as a loving, inquisitive man willing to learn, love, share, give. Ariel is also willing to give up the structured maternal society and adjust to what she sees, feels and thinks is right. This is a great book with plenty of romance, eroticism and humor. It's also a great look at how things can change if minds and hearts are open to it. I found this story to be highly entertaining but with a lot of depth to it.
