B.J. McCall starts with a wise grandmother and a godmother who‘s a witch. She mixes them with two young people who don‘t seem to be able to see the trees for the forest. Astrid has lusted after Varis for months but she’s been burned by fortune hunters in the past, can’t see past her belief that Varis must have used her grandmother for his own gain.

Add the family heirloom emerald, a centuries old spell and you have Astrid and Varis able to give up their inhibitions. As long as they can blame a witch’s spell they don’t have to commit to their feelings.

I think Ms. McCall does a great job building the characters with their weaknesses. She goes one step farther when she takes away their inhibitions and lets them give in to what they really feel. These two aren’t young children but they act like it sometimes. Luckily the author knows what’s best for them! She goes about showing them in a well written story that’s easy to read.
