Leona Ransley has one chance to save Pryerston and the people in it from the evil Baron Sedgewick and the even more despicable Veronique. Aldwin Treynarde wants to please his lord, Geoffrey de Lanceau, by retrieving a ruby pendant Leona now possesses. Neither expected to see one another again after an incident where Leona was almost killed by bees in a childhood game. Thrown together after their meeting doesn't go as either planned, they find themselves battling mercenaries and their own feelings in their quest to do the most honorable thing for the people they care about.

Catherine Kean writes some of the best historical romances around. This one is no exception as she weaves humor and suspense into this tale filled with unique characters and the flavor of twelfth century chivalry. Leona is no shrinking violet as her strength of character and sense of honor is a great match for Aldwin. She may not be able to do needlepoint but her ability with a needle helps Aldwin out more than once. As does her strong right arm and good aim with rocks. Veronique is the opposite of Leona in every way. She will stop at nothing to get her way and will evoke a darker emotion in the reader as much as Aldwin's and Leona's love story warms us.

Secondary characters and great dialogue take their places in the tale to enhance the flavor of the times and the struggles the two main players must face. Leona's father, Twig, Sir Reginald, de Lanceau, some of the mercenaries, all help complete the tale. This is one of those books that linger in our mind long after the last page is turned. The sense of hard times lived with honor and nobility fills our mind and warms our heart as great books often do.
