Handsome Detective Chief Inspector Richard Hayward moves into the small old town of Burshill which was only a small village when Laura Clayton moved there as a young bride. He was hit head on with the burdens of the new place. As his wife Kate was off dealing with her father's afflictions. Detective Hayward was dealing with the death of Laura Clayton and the tribulations that took place, with the help of Scotland Yard among other friends and acquaintances.

Marjorie Owen delivers a nice piece of old fashioned detective work. Who would have thought of such an outcome? You discover that even women of class have secrets that go unfounded since their youth. Jealousy, greed, and mayhem were all dealt out along with fine investigative work. The span of time is nicely addressed, along with a sense of timely visual audacities that were broached.

The authenticity of the story is delivered through the wording that is used during the story. Right from the start, you feel drawn to the characters and the flights and frights they go through. I liked it because it gave thought to those really good detective movies that used to play on TV. Sometime during the middle of the story, you start to think you know who'd done it. However, you think things like maybe it's the son or daughter of so and so. So it keeps you on your toes as to who really did it. I can tell you this, it's not the butler. Sorry ,I just had to put that in there.

This is the type of novel that I would be pleased to tell others about. It's a good read, especially if you like old detective stories. Sherlock Holmes would have been proud to have met such a clever rival.
