Saxon Lady Ariel of Elmstead decides to disguise herself as a boy to learn to use a sword so that she can lead her father’s army against the Normans. She hopes to find the knight that took her innocence the year before and left her with child. She does not count on being taken hostage by that very man, only he believes her to be a Saxon boy. Now she's left with the decision of revealing her true self or continuing with her charade.

Broc St. Ceneri takes a young Saxon boy hostage at the battle of Hastings. This isn't the norm for him, but this young boy looks so much like the woman that has bewitched him for more than a year now. He finds himself offering to train the boy as a knight. He believes the young boy from Elmstead must be a relative to his beautiful Saxon girl and that in returning to Elmstead, which has been given to him by the new king that he will once again find her.

Ms. Chenery has written a great story with two lovable characters that at times I would have liked to shake. Ariel is a strong heroine that takes a stand for what she believes. She proves a woman can do anything a man can in a time when a woman was considered beneath men. And Broc is handsome, strong, and loyal but so stubborn and blind to what is right in front of his face. The trials these two suffer through are at times overwhelming, but they struggled through it all, including war, a disturbed evil man, being sold into slavery, and even being kidnapped. I would recommend this one to anyone looking for an excellent historical that will keep them on the edge of their seats, biting their nails or even itching to shake someone. I loved it.
