| Lady of the Seals tells the tale of David Fraser, a handsome young sailor who finds himself shipwrecked on a small island just off the coast of Scotland. He awakens on the beach, naked and shivering, sunburned and sick, to find that he has been rescued by a young woman who calls herself Gilly. Gilly is not "so much beautiful as arresting," and she lives alone with only the seals who visit the shore for company. Pleased to have the company of the injured man, she invites him to stay in her small cottage while he heals.
As David and Gilly get to know one another, a strong attraction grows between them. And although David is warned by the villagers in the tiny island's only town that strange things have been seen on the far shore, his love for Gilly holds him, and each time he leaves her home for a few days to find work or make purchases, he never fails to come back. In time, though, the persistent rumors reveal Gilly's secret to him - she is a selkie - and he knows that to keep her by his side, he must steal her seal skin and hide it from her. Gilly discovers David's betrayal soon enough, but she loves him, and without her seal skin, she is powerless to leave him anyway. So their relationship continues, and the matter is never mentioned. But when she becomes pregnant, her need to return to the water causes a terrible illness, and David finally realizes that he must release her or she will die. She promises that she will return to him if she can, but they both know what the legends say about that. Will they be able to find a way to be together? When I first received this book for review, I thought I would just take a peek at it to see what it was about, only to find, several hours later, that I had arrived at the last page. The storyline of this hauntingly beautiful tale was so engrossing and the characters so appealing that I just couldn't stop reading. Although the selkie theme will appeal strongly to those who love Celtic lore, this is such a good story overall that it should be popular with all romance fans. I highly recommend this title!
