| Lord Reginald "Reggie" Beauchamp has a problem. Against his father's orders, he's writing a book. The first time he submitted it, it was rejected. The publisher told him it was lacking something. Reggie needs to sell his book. His father has ordered him to marry his cousin Portia. Reggie has no intentions of doing so. He knows he must come up with some sort of means in order to support himself. Reggie was to receive property from his grandfather when he turned the age of twenty-five, but his father refused to let go of it. He found some obscure technicality and used it in order to keep Reggie from gaining his inheritance. Reggie's father controls everyone and everything around him.
Reggie is at a party at the country seat of Lord and Lady Mythe when he sees her. She will be the perfect heroine in his novel. She turns out to be Miss Chloe Godelin. She has come out for the season, along with her spinister aunt. A friend of Reggie's tells him she has a decent portion from her father. Her father died, leaving his title to an uncle of Miss Godelin's. Reggie is definitely interested in her. The added bonus of her having some money doesn't particularly hurt. Chloe is looking for a man to wed. She has very strict guidelines a man must meet before she will consider marrying him. He must be rich and powerful. When Chloe's father died, he set her uncle up as her guardian. Her guardian went through all her money and was an abusive man. He finally died and left everything to his son, a man even more abusive. Chloe is hoping to marry a man rich and powerful enough to obtain the guardianship of her two sisters. The attraction between Reggie and Chloe is instanteous. Reggie has decided to rewrite his novel and model his heroine after Chloe. The two of them reach an understanding. They finally discover the truth about each other and end the understanding. But their friends have different ideas and constantly contrive to get them together. Will Reggie ever be able to stand up to his controlling father? What will happen to Chloe's sisters? And don't forget about Reggie's book. What will happen when people read it and realize the heroine is in reality Chloe? Delle Jacobs has written a wonderful traditional Regency romance with LADY VALIANT. From the very first page, we get swept up into the Regency era, with the season and yachts and even the class differences. The characters are all wonderfully portrayed, from Chloe dealing with having no money to Reggie's father driving away his entire family by controlling them. Instead of just the heartfelt sigh at the end of this story, I actually shed a tear or two. I highly recommend LADY VALIANT to all lovers of traditional Regencies.
