Lady Caroline Elmhurst left London in a unique way—she and her maid climbed down a bed sheet to the ground to escape the debtors who were about to knock down her door. A twice-widowed woman with no funds had to find a man with lots of money who would fall in love with her. She thought she had found him. When invited to a house party, she knew she only had a few days before it would become common knowledge that she was being pursued by her creditors.

Nicholas Congrevance was determined to continue his exploitation of rich, gullible women. It was the way he survived. He was impressed when he met Lady Caroline Elmhurst. He thought she was beautiful, an available widow, and seemed interested in him. Fortunately for him, they were both invited to the country for a house party. He didn’t intend to fall in love—just be available to take care of her needs. Neither Nick nor Caroline was aware the other was penniless!

Janet Mullany has written a truly unique book in a rather uncommon manner. The story is funny—the way it is told was different from any I’ve ever seen. The two main characters tell the story from his/her point of view by alternating from one to the other. Conflict abounded for these two would-be lovers. Their man and maid servants did not, however, have the same problems.

I got a bit confused trying to ascertain when the other supporting people would turn against Caroline. At times they really liked her. Other times—not at all. The overall outcome of the book was very entertaining. It definitely had a surprise ending. The settings were described beautifully; the details of places, people and things made me feel as if I was living through this house party.

The sensuality was obvious but it wasn’t overly sexual. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed a romantic comedy.
