McKenzie, the only name she went by, lived with her father and two ranch helpers at the Bar K Ranch in West Texas. Since they had moved there, troubles abounded. So much had happened they were about to lose their home. All their ranch hands had left them, all of their cattle had been rustled, and her father’s horse had been shot out from under him leaving him in a wheelchair.

McKenzie’s mother had run off years ago after choosing another man over McKenzie’s father. She felt that she had to take responsibility for all the work around the place even though her father’s mind was good. Her father wanted her to marry—she had no desires in that direction. She had never met anyone who attracted her attention until she met a gunslinger named Wade Forbes. He was in the area visiting an old Army buddy, Mike Webber, who owned a nearby ranch. No one was bothering his stock.

Ms. Sandi Hampton has done a great job with the plot of this story. Her storyline is different from anything I’ve read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Her characters had some problems which caused enough suspense to keep the book interesting. Her characters were so believable that even the bad ones were interesting.

The book moved swiftly and was exciting to read. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a historical romance.
